How accurate is Spren?

Body composition metrics such as body fat percentage, lean mass, and insights about fat distribution can provide a more accurate picture of your health and fitness than weight or BMI. However, body composition metrics are only useful if they are accurate and reliable.

Spren’s body composition algorithms produce results that are comparable to or better than medical-grade FDA-approved methods used by doctors.

How do we calculate body composition?

The Spren Body Composition app uses the camera on your smartphone and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology to provide accurate and reliable measurements of your body composition. The app guides you through an easy process of taking a full-body selfie, then Spren’s AI algorithm extracts features of your body, such as body shape and contours, and uses machine learning to provide a detailed assessment of your health.

By using the Spren Body Composition app, you can track your progress towards your fitness and health goals with confidence, knowing that the data you're collecting is reliable and accurate. It's a convenient and easy-to-use tool that can help you take control of your health and fitness like never before.

How Does Spren Compare To Other Body Composition Methods?

Other common body composition methods such as DEXA and underwater weighing are expensive specialty screenings that require travel to a facility where a screener must be present to administer the test. These methods can vary extensively, ranging anywhere from 5% all the way up to 15% difference in body fat percentage scores.

Bioimpedance scales have been particularly noted for their inaccuracy. A study published in the Journal for Exercise and Nutrition looked at the accuracy of bioimpedance scales, concluding that “Caution should be taken when using BIA devices to assess BF% as devices demonstrated unacceptable agreement compared to DEXA.”
