What is fat mass index (FMI)?

Your fat mass index (FMI) is your total fat mass divided by your height squared (Fat Mass / Height² in kg/m²). Similar to body mass index (BMI), it calculates the amount of fat you have relative to your height, where BMI calculates your total weight relative to height. Unlike BMI, FMI is a gender-specific measurement.

FMI normal reference values:

Male 3-6 kg/m²
Female 5-9 kg/m²

FMI measurements below the normal reference values indicate fat deficit. Values below 2 for males and below 3.5 for females indicate severe fat deficit. FMI values above the normal reference values indicate excess fat. Values higher than 9 for males and higher than 13 for females indicate obesity. Using your fat mass index, you can efficiently track your progression of fat loss or gain, depending on your body composition goals.
